Space and Earthrise
We are in our Space Unit. We have completed two lessons in Mystery Science, which is our new science curriculum. We also talked about Earthrise. This is a short film that focuses on the Apollo 8 Spaceflight and the famous Earthrise photo taken during this mission. We also listened to and read an amazing free verse poem written by Amanda Gorman which is also titled Earthrise. It is a beautiful poem and it is amazing to hear her passionately read her work. I have placed both items below for you to enjoy. The students were very interested and wanted to share these with their families as well.

Biosphere 2
In science this week, we have been discussing Biosphere 2 which is located in Arizona. This ecosystem was sealed for 2 years and the scientists living inside needed to grow their own food and monitor their environment. Although it was to be completely sealed from the outside world, it was later disclosed that additional oxygen was added to the environment because the percentage was too low. It has since been purchased by University of Arizona and amazing scientific research is still taking place there.
The students worked as scientists to plan the food that would be needed if they were living in Biosphere 2. The food could be grown and from an animal or an animal product. The students came up with a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Then, they needed to decide what would have to be grown or gathered from an animal. We had extensive discussions about this and also the problems that could arise from such an endeavor. I will include a few links below if you would like to see clips of what we watched that added to our understanding of this experience.
